The Netherlands has more than 1.6 million freelancers. A large portion relies on word-of-mouth or paid advertising to attract new clients. But there is a third approach that is far more effective and requires zero advertising budget: consistently ranking high in Google Maps for the local queries your target audience makes every day.
The freelancer paradox in Local SEO: smaller can be better
Large businesses have more marketing budget, but freelancers have a crucial advantage: authenticity. Google increasingly rewards businesses that maintain a genuine, personal relationship with their clients. Reviews from real customers describing specific experiences, fast personal responses to questions and messages, and consistently published content demonstrating real expertise β these are signals a freelancer can deliver far more naturally than a large company with a marketing department.
Our plumber case study illustrates this perfectly: Jan de Vries, a self-employed plumber in Amersfoort, started his Local SEO optimization in September 2025. After twelve weeks, he ranked in the top-3 of the Local Pack for his three most important search terms. In doing so, he displaced two installation companies with five and twelve employees respectively.
Step 1: Optimize your GBP as a freelancer
The first and most impactful thing you can do as a freelancer is make your Google Business Profile complete and accurate. Many freelancers have created a GBP but filled it in only 50-60%. Every incomplete field is a missed opportunity.
Set your service area at neighborhood level, not city level. If you live in Amersfoort but also work in the surrounding municipalities of Soest, Baarn, and Leusden, add all of these as service areas. This expands your visibility in all these areas without needing a second location.
Step 2: Use your personal relationship for reviews
The biggest advantage of a freelancer over a large company in review management is the personal relationship you have with every client. Large companies send automated emails; you can send a personal WhatsApp message that feels like a message from an acquaintance, not a marketing communication.
Jan de Vries uses this approach: directly after completing a job, he sends a WhatsApp message: “Good afternoon [name], thanks for the trust today. If you were satisfied, could you help me with a short review on Google? That helps others in [city] find me. [direct link to his review page].” His conversion rate is 31% β one in three clients actually writes a review. The average for large installation companies with automated systems is 8-12%.
Step 3: Content that proves your expertise
One of the most effective but least-applied Local SEO strategies for freelancers is publishing service pages per municipality or neighborhood. Instead of one general page “plumber in Amersfoort,” create separate pages for “plumber Amersfoort North,” “plumber Soest,” and “plumber Leusden.” Each page contains unique content: which projects have you done in that neighborhood, what are the specific issues there, and why are you the best choice for that location?
The accountancy firm in our case β Mark Smits from Eindhoven β applied this strategy for three sectors. After publishing three sector-specific service pages, his organic traffic increased 340% and his inquiries tripled within four months.
