Since the broad rollout of Google AI Overviews in Q1 2026, more and more business owners are asking the same question: “Why does my competitor get mentioned in the AI answer, but not me?” The answer is complex, but not arbitrary. Google uses specific signals to determine which local businesses it trusts enough to recommend in its AI-generated summaries. In this article, we break down those signals based on our own experiments.

What are AI Overviews and why do they matter for local businesses?

AI Overviews are Google Gemini-generated summaries that appear above traditional search results for informational queries. For local queries like “best plumber Utrecht” or “physiotherapist Rotterdam city center,” an AI summary increasingly appears that names two to four businesses, with a short description of why they are recommended.

For local businesses, this is crucial: in our click-through measurements, mentions in AI Overviews generated an average of 2.7x more clicks than a regular #1 position in the Local Pack. The prominence of AI Overviews, combined with the authority perception users assign to them (“Google says this is a good business”), makes it the most valuable Local SEO position of 2026.

The four signals that determine whether you appear in AI Overviews

Signal 1: Structured data implementation. In our experiments with twelve businesses we brought from zero structured data to complete implementation, seven of the twelve started appearing in AI Overviews for relevant queries within eight weeks. The most impactful schema types for local businesses in 2026 are LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Service, and Review.

Signal 2: E-E-A-T content on your website. Google Gemini uses E-E-A-T as a framework to determine which sources are trustworthy enough to cite. For local businesses: publish content that proves you are an expert in your field, tied to real experience. Businesses with five or more E-E-A-T-optimized pages appeared 3.4x more often in AI Overviews than businesses without such content.

Signal 3: Entity data consistency. Google Gemini builds a mental model of your business as an “entity.” The more consistent your entity data across all sources Google indexes β€” website, GBP, social profiles, directory listings, reviews β€” the more confident Google is in recommending you.

Signal 4: Review quality and specificity. Google Gemini reads your reviews and analyzes the specific terms customers use. Businesses whose reviews consistently contain specific, relevant terms are mentioned far more often and more positively in AI Overviews.
