Can a brand-new domain appear in Google within a day and then stay there? We recorded it from the moment of registration. minigastricbypass.nl ranked #2 24.2 hours after registration, got a link in a Google AI Overview after 11 days and was still at the top for the measured search terms on 12 October 2026. Without a single built backlink, against hospitals and clinics that have been online for years. This is the timeline, with the evidence per step and an honest account of what it does not prove.

Follow-up to the first test. In September we recorded in the first topical authority test with three new domains how fast they ranked. Here you can read whether those positions still hold three weeks later, and whether Google AI picks them up.

Can a new domain without backlinks rank within a day?

Yes, on local long-tail. With topical authority, one topic worked out in depth, a new domain without links reached the Google top 3 within 24 hours and stayed there for three weeks.

  • Registration to first ranking: 24.2 hours for minigastricbypass.nl, 3.9 days for maagverkleining-info.nl (first screenshot).
  • First clicks: maagverkleining-info.nl on 21 September, day 3 after registration.
  • AI Overview: on 3 October Google linked to a page of the test sites in two AI Overviews.
  • After three weeks: on 12 October still #1, #2 and #3 on the measured long-tail, also in a logged-out browser.
  • Technically 100: PageSpeed Insights: SEO 100, performance 100 and accessibility 96 (12 October).
  • No backlinks: no link building, no bought links, against domains with hundreds to thousands of referring domains.
  • Limit: local long-tail only, few clicks, and not a fixed AI source.

What is topical authority, and why can a new domain have it?

Topical authority is evidence that a site covers a subject in depth and coherently. It is not a number Google publishes. An old domain with many links can be less relevant on a specific topic than a new site that works that topic out in detail. A large Semrush study of ChatGPT (20 July 2026, more than 50,000 brands and 600,000 citations) found that broad domain metrics such as organic traffic and Authority Score predicted who dominated a topic in only about half of the cases. Topic-level presence weighed more.

For Google the basis is ordinary SEO. Google writes in its own guide to generative AI features that AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems and retrieve pages from the search index. The page AI features and your website says no additional requirements or special optimisations are needed. It also says AI features may use a “query fan-out”: one question is split into several sub-searches. A site with a precise page per sub-question has more chances to be found.

A useful working model comes from WEB20 Ranker: authority, extractability and corroboration by others. Authority gives a reason to consider the source, extractability makes the answer easy to find, corroboration comes from outside your own site. It is a model, not a Google formula. In this test mainly the first two carried weight; outside corroboration was minimal. Structured data is not a requirement, as the test of AI visibility without structured data already showed.

How do you build topical authority on a new domain?

With one clearly scoped topic, a separate page per sub-question and local figures that are only true on that page. That is how both test sites are built.

Look at the snippet Google shows for Zaandam (in Dutch): “A mini gastric bypass takes 60 to 90 minutes and gives 30 to 40 percent weight loss on average. In Zaandam 16.3% of adults…” That is a direct answer plus a local figure in two sentences. Exactly the kind of text that is easy to extract.

Which authorities does a new domain without backlinks compete with?

Not a single backlink was built or bought for either site: no link building, no guest posts, no paid mentions. In the results they sit next to real authorities in healthcare: hospitals, obesity clinics and a national bariatric centre, with domains that have existed for years, many referring domains and a medical reputation. Exactly the kind of sources you would expect Google to always favour on a medical topic.

Domain in the results Type Referring domains according to Keyword Surfer Position on 12 October

A new domain without links ranking above a hospital or clinic: that is where topical authority makes the difference. Not the strength of the domain, but how precisely the page fits this one question. That loose links and mentions do not help by themselves was shown earlier in the test with 200 purchased citations. Which factors do weigh heavily locally is in the research into local ranking factors in 2026 (in Dutch).

Evidence 1: when were the new domains registered?

The registration date of a .nl domain is public at SIDN. We matched it with the registrar confirmation emails. Times in Dutch time (UTC+2).

Evidence 2: how fast does a new domain rank after registration?

minigastricbypass.nl went online at 16:26, 8.4 hours after registration; the build times are in how fast a new website can rank. The next morning at 08:13 both test domains ranked #1 and #2 for “mini gastric bypass zaandam”. That is 24.2 hours after minigastricbypass.nl was registered. At 13:13 the new domain ranked #1 for “kosten mini bypass zaandam” (cost mini bypass Zaandam), with the page dated “18 hours ago”. Google still shows the date “22 Sep 2026” for those pages: the day of registration.

23 September, 08:13: both new domains at #1 and #2, 24.2 hours after minigastricbypass.nl was registered.

maagverkleining-info.nl had a slower start. On 18 September Search Console reported a redirect error and on 20 September the sitemap contained a wrong address. Still, the first 6 clicks came on 21 September, day 3. On 22 September at 06:51 the site ranked #1 for “maagverkleining info alkmaar”.

Evidence 3: do the rankings hold in the first week?

An early top position can be a spike that fades. That happened with another test site in September: almost everything dropped away after two days. So we searched again in the following days.

  • 26 September, 06:32: minigastricbypass.nl at #2 for “mini gastric bypass info zwolle”, behind an established bariatric centre.
  • 29 September, 23:12: maagverkleining-info.nl at #1 and #3 for “maagverkleining info zaandam”, in a logged-out browser.

29 September, 23:14: minigastricbypass.nl at #2 for Hilversum.

Evidence 4: does a new domain appear in the Google AI Overview?

Until 26 September the sites sat directly below the AI Overview, but not in it. On 3 October that changed. For “mini gastric bypass info hilversum” the AI Overview said you arrange the procedure through a GP referral, “or view the Mini Gastric Bypass Info”, with a link. For “mini gastric bypass info zaandam” it referred to “the Mini Gastric Bypass Zaandam guide”. The tabs next to it had the test sites’ pages open. The address behind the link itself is not on the screenshot, so we did not record which of the two domains it was.

Evidence 5: do the rankings hold after three weeks?

Evidence 6: how many impressions and clicks does it bring?

Impressions grew: for maagverkleining-info.nl from 1,420 to 3,650, for minigastricbypass.nl from 140 to 406 per week. Google shows the sites more often, not less. Clicks stayed low, and for minigastricbypass.nl they fell. Visibility held; traffic is (still) modest.

7 October: maagverkleining-info.nl, 25 clicks and 3,650 impressions in 28 days.

7 October: minigastricbypass.nl, 1 click and 406 impressions in 7 days.

How technically clean are the new domains?

Technically close to flawless: Google PageSpeed Insights gave maagverkleining-info.nl (desktop) and minigastricbypass.nl (mobile) a score of 100 for SEO, 100 for performance, 100 for best practices and 96 for accessibility on 12 October 2026. “Agentic browsing”, the new check whether AI agents can use the site, also scored 3 out of 3. That is the basis on which topical authority can work: nothing stops Google or an AI system from reading the pages.

12 October, 10:09: minigastricbypass.nl on mobile, SEO 100 and performance 100.

A perfect technical score is not a ranking factor in itself. It only takes the brakes off: fast pages, one H1, a correct sitemap and no redirect loops. The ranking itself came from the content.

What does this topical authority test not prove?

  • No competitive terms. All positions concern local long-tail. On a broad term you compete with hospitals and clinics with years of trust.
  • The domain name helps. Both domains contain the subject literally, and search terms with “info” are close to “maagverkleining-info”. That effect was not measured separately.
  • AI Overview not stable. The AI Overview links were recorded on 3 October, for two searches. On 12 October the sites sat directly below the AI Overview for two other searches, but not visibly among its sources. Which of the two domains was behind the AI link is not on the screenshot.
  • Domain history not checked. SIDN shows the current registration. Whether a domain existed before we could not verify; the web archive was not reachable from our test environment. We built no links, but Keyword Surfer shows 19 referring domains for maagverkleining-info.nl and 34 for minigastricbypass.nl without www; where they come from was not investigated.
  • Snapshots. Positions differ per searcher, location and device. We searched logged in and logged out, but from one place.
  • Medical subject. That Google shows these pages quickly says nothing about whether AI content without medical review is wise. Have such texts checked by someone with medical knowledge.

How do you apply topical authority to your own business?

  1. Choose one topic and list all sub-questions: per service, per place, costs, reimbursement, pathway.
  2. One page per sub-question, with the place in the title, H1 and first sentence, and a local figure that is only true on that page.
  3. Start with the answer. Two sentences that answer the question directly; for Zaandam, Google took over exactly such a sentence.
  4. Technically clean from day one: no redirect loops, a correct sitemap, submitted to Search Console right away.
  5. Record everything: the registration time at the registry, the first live version, and dated screenshots after 1 day, 1 week and 3 weeks.
  6. Build outside corroboration: mentions, video and reviews. How fast that reaches AI is shown in the YouTube Shorts test in Google AI, and how fast it goes wrong in an AI reputation from one Reddit post.

Frequently asked questions

Can a new domain rank within a day?

Yes, on local long-tail. minigastricbypass.nl was registered on 22 September 2026 at 07:59 and ranked #2 for "mini gastric bypass zaandam" on 23 September at 08:13, 24.2 hours later. This test does not prove that for broad, competitive search terms.

How do you prove when a .nl domain was registered?

Through the public RDAP data of SIDN, the .nl registry. It shows the registration date to the second in UTC. We matched it with the registrar confirmation email, which arrived within a minute of registration.

Did the rankings hold?

On the measured long-tail terms, yes. On 12 October maagverkleining-info.nl was still #1 for "maagverkleining info zaandam" and "maagverkleining info hilversum", and the two domains held #1, #2 and #3 for "mini gastric bypass info zaandam". Clicks stayed low.

Did the sites appear in the Google AI Overview?

On 3 October, yes: for two searches the AI Overview linked in its text to a page of the test sites. On 12 October the sites were directly below the AI Overview for two other searches, but not visible among its sources.

What is topical authority?

Topical authority is evidence that a site covers a subject in depth and coherently. Here: a separate page per treatment and per city, with local figures, linked together. It is not an official Google score but a working term for topic-level relevance.

Did the sites have backlinks?

No, we did not build or buy a single backlink. The sites compete with hospitals and clinics whose domains have existed for years: a bariatric centre with 327 referring domains and a hospital with 10,700, according to the SEO extension in the screenshots. Still the new sites ranked above them on local long-tail.

How much traffic did this bring?

Little. On 7 October maagverkleining-info.nl had 25 clicks and 3,650 impressions in 28 days. minigastricbypass.nl had 1 click and 406 impressions in 7 days. A #1 on long-tail is not the same as a lot of traffic.

Do you need special AI optimisation for the AI Overview?

According to Google, no. Google writes that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations and that normal SEO best practices apply. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.

Does the domain name play a role?

Probably. Both domains contain the subject literally, and the search terms with "info" are close to the domain name. We did not measure that effect separately.

How do I set up a test like this myself?

Record the registration time via the registry, note the first live version, submit the sitemap right away and search at fixed moments in a logged-out browser. Screenshot every search with date and time and compare after one and three weeks.
